Top Nine Instagram Photos of 2020

posted in: Photography | 1

It’s that time of the year to see what my top 9 most popular photos were on Instagram. Last year, I had a clear outlier which I knew ahead of time would be my most popular photo.

This year there was less of a discrepancy, although I was surprised to see that my top photo had 31 more likes than my second most liked photo.

There are a couple of notable things about this year’s top 9, at least to me.

One is that 8 of these are film photos. The one digital photo is of a film camera I took with my Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. Last year, I had 3 on my top 9 from that and 3 from my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.

The other notable thing is that 6 of these photos all came from the same roll of film. I really don’t know what to make of that.

I guess another notable thing is the line outside of Monk’s Cafe which I took on February 17, just about a month before the pandemic started significantly changing our lives. This line was for the annual release of Pliny the Younger beer. Seems so strange now seeing a long, tight line of people waiting to get inside a small bar.

Back in July, I posted my personal favorite photos from the first half of the year. Two of these 9 (Spring Trees and Mural Reflection) were on that list.

I plan on doing the same soon for the second half of the year. Only 2 of the above (Black Lives Matter and Yashica Mat-124G) were taken during the second half of the year, and I didn’t tag either as favorites so my list from the second half will all be unique.

I only updated a few 35mm film scans to Instagram, so it was not surprising that only one of my top 9 was a film scan. I like the photograph of the Comcast Building. I did a panoramic stitch of the building last year. I have never seen a line like that outside of Monk’s Cafe. That’s insane.
