It’s always interesting (to me at least) to see which of my photos were the most liked on Instagram by the end of the year.
I used the Top Nine app to generate the content and grid to share on my Instagram account. I also wanted to post here to add a little description and context for the pictures.
I did know that my top photo was going to be the one of Joan Mitchell’s The Sink at the Seattle Art Museum. We traveled to Seattle back in January when Holly had a conference there, and we also took that opportunity to visit with some of her family.
I noticed at the time that the number of likes (138) for the Mitchell photo was way more than what I usual get. According to Top Nine, my average is 17 so this photo was definitely an outlier. Taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.
I didn’t have any recollection of other popular posts so generating this list was surprising. Although I can say that I’m not entirely surprised that one of my food photos was the second most liked since those tend to get a fair amount of likes.
This one was a collage of images from my birthday dinner at Victor Café here in Philadelphia. Taken with my phone, a Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus.
Similar to my food pictures, my drink pictures are also fairly popular. The third most popular picture is of a couple of margaritas at Los Camaradas, one of our local restaurants.
Normally, most of the pictures I post to Instagram aren’t all that “insta.” Usually, I will edit my pictures at home and then post them later to Instagram. Some of my food and drink photos will be sent at the time, and this margarita picture was one of those times. In fact, I felt this picture was ephemeral enough that I didn’t actually keep a copy of it. It only exists on Instagram. Taken with my Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus.
I was surprised that a photo I had taken with my Flexaret when I first got it and didn’t really know how to operate it turned out to be one of my top nine. This is just a picture of a little “Love” decoration, based on the iconic Robert Indiana statue, we have sitting on our windowsill. Because it is in black and white and is slightly out of focus, it has a unique look which is, I’m assuming, why it was popular.
The number five photo is another picture from our trip to Seattle also at the art museum: Middle Fork by John Grade. It’s a stunning sculpture hanging in the lobby. Taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.
The number six photo is of my Pentacon Six TL which I got back in May and which, alas, has developed issues with advancing film. I have yet to figure out a fix so it hasn’t gotten any use in recent months. But it’s still a cool looking camera. Taken with my Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus.
I’m particularly fond of the seventh most popular picture so I’m glad it turned out to be one of my more popular photos of the year. I’m not much into cars, but I can appreciate the design of older ones and the grill and headlights of this Pontiac we encountered on one of our walks certainly have an interesting look. Taken with my Canon EOS Rebel 2000.
My next most popular photo is of Bredenbeck’s Bakery and Ice Cream Parlor in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia. Not only do they have great baked goods and ice cream, but they also are located in a beautiful old building with a mural on the side. Taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.
The last photo is a picture of one of the Ghosts Bikes in city. These bikes are placed at intersections in honor of riders who were killed in car accidents. This picture was used by Billy Penn, a local news organization, for an article about the Ghost Bikes which may have contributed to its popularity. Taken with my Canon EOS Rebel 2000.
2019 was a busy and fun year for taking photos. I feel I really learned a lot about photography over the past year and certainly expanded my interest in film photography, taking over 900 film photos as well as adding to my collection of analog cameras.
Going into 2020, I’m looking forward to building on what I have learned and taken possibly even more pictures!
