Late in the summer, I worked on a fun project tracing an image of a wine label in Procreate.
As it seems like we are never lacking wine bottles, I decided to try another tracing project. This time, however, I wanted to follow-up by drawing the same label by hand.
We had gotten a rather delightful natural wine, Pipeño País, from our local wine place, Jet Wine Bar. We have really missed being able to hang out at Jet during the pandemic but have enjoyed buying wine from them.
Not only did I enjoy this red wine from Chile, but I also liked the fun label.
I followed my usual workflow of bringing the picture into Procreate and then reducing its opacity. I then create layers for various parts of the image. I ended up with 7 layers. Initially, I thought I would have a layer for each letter, but considering how all the letters lead into the next, having separate layers was not practical. I had the capital P in its own layer, the rest of the main word in another layer and then layers for each of the other smaller words.
As always, one of my favorite features of Procreate is that it generates a time lapse video of my work.
For my hand drawing, I only worked with the main logo. I actually did not intend to include anything else in my Procreate version but wanted to play with adding some color.
I first created a light pencil outline.
I then filled the outline using one of my water-based Dual Brush Pens from Tombow. I’ve had this set for a while but haven’t used it much. I chose the N45 brush which seemed closest to the original color.
I enjoyed the feel of using the Tombow brush and really liked the result.
Doing both the tracing in Procreate and the drawing by hand provided great lettering practice. Given that we never have a shortage of wine bottles, I’m guessing there will be more such exercises in my future.
