I haven’t been as interested in buying new film cameras lately. After buying my Olympus XA in March 2021, I felt pretty satisfied with my film camera collection. However, I did recently buy a Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 lens.
Last February when I was searching for a new digital camera, I contemplated getting rid of my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. Apparently, DSLRs are a dying breed, and Canon is no longer making any new lenses to fit them. I ultimately decided to get a Nikon Z fc which wasn’t as expensive as other cameras I was looking at so I didn’t feel like I needed to sell the Mark IV. I’m quite happy with that decision.
The 28mm lens is in excellent condition. What’s nice, for me, about the EF lenses is that they also fit my Canon EOS Rebel 2000.
Getting the 28mm lens gives me a rich collection of lenses for these 2 cameras. I have the 24-105mm f/4 and 17-40mm f/4 lenses that I got when I originally bought my Mark IV. I have the 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 lens that came with my Rebel 2000, which I rarely use. The only time I’ve used it in the past couple of years is for macro photography because the macro adaptor I have only fits on that lens. Over the course of the past 5 years, I picked up a couple of prime lenses, the 50mm f/1.8 lens and the 85mm f/1.8 lens. Getting the 28mm lens provides a great range of choices.
As soon as it arrived, I tested it with my Mark IV on a walk along the Schuylkill River Trail. It was early November so there was plenty of fall color not only along the trail but along the walk to the trail.
Of course, there were things other than the fall color to take pictures of.
Of course, I wanted to test the lens on my Rebel 2000. I loaded it with a roll of Lomography Potsdam which I used once before and liked.
I went out twice with the Rebel 2000. Once on a short neighborhood walk. I was able to take a picture of a wall decorated with musical notes. I had passed this wall several times before when I didn’t have a camera on me so it was rewarding to finally get around to taking a picture of it. I also took a picture of a plate of clementines that was outside of a hair studio. Since I was not a customer, I resisted taking a clementine and was satisfied with just the photo.
I finished the roll over a month later on a longer walk. I didn’t think I was going to finish the roll, but, luckily, I did.
That walk was about a week before Christmas so I was able to find a variety of Christmas decorations.
The rest of the roll was just various things I saw on our walk to the Chestnut Street Bridge and across the Schuylkill River.
I am really happy with the results I got with the 28mm lens with both my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and my Canon EOS Rebel 2000. This was the second roll I shot with the Potsdam, and I am really pleased with that as well.
