Mandalas in Procreate

In my January 2023 update, I mentioned that I took a Procreate for Beginners class in Skillshare. One of the exercises was to use the drawing assist feature to create a “mandala.” (I’d argue that what the instructor calls a “mandala” isn’t truly a mandala, but, for a lack of a better term, I’ll appropriate that word.)

Drawing assist makes it easy to repeat patterns which simplifies the process of creating geometric configurations.

I enjoyed creating one as part of the class.

In fact, I enjoyed it so much, that I made a few more:

Although I was happy with how these turned out, I wanted to crate something a little more complex. I approached the next one more deliberately and took more time thinking about what I wanted. I also tried a few different approaches. One of the great features about Procreate is that you can easily erase something you added or delete a layer you’re not pleased with.

I was delighted by the result:

Another great feature of Procreate is the ability to create a video of your drawing process. In the video below, you can see how I made this image and some of the trial and error that went into it.

I have used Procreate in the past but hadn’t for a while. Taking that Procreate for Beginners class re-energized my enthusiasm for it. Enough so, that I decided to purchase a couple of things to enhance the experience of drawing on the iPad: a Paperlike screen protector and an Uppercase Design ergonomic grip.

The Paperlike was a bit of a project to apply, but it was worth it. I wouldn’t say that it feels like working with paper but it gives the Apple Pencil some much needed traction. In addition to protecting the screen, it also doesn’t get fingerprints. It does get some less intrusive smudges but those are mostly noticeable when the screen is off. I tried cleaning it but didn’t have much luck. Since they are obtrusive when it’s on, they haven’t been much of a distraction. Other than that, I’ve been very happy with it so far.

The ergonomic grip is also rather nice. I haven’t used it much yet, but it does make holding the Apple Pencil more comfortable. The grip prevents the Pencil from attaching to the iPad via the magnet. I have an older iPad and an Apple Pencil Gen 1 so I don’t need to use the magnetic attachment for charging the Apple Pencil. It’s only a minor inconvenience for me.

I’ve found working on these “mandalas” to be therapeutic. They’ve been a nice way to destress after a long day at work. I’m glad I found a way to renew my interest in drawing on my iPad.
