January 2024 Light Box Photos

posted in: Photography | 0

This year, January was, as it often is, dark and miserable so I didn’t get outside often to take photos. In order to scratch my photography itch, I broke out my light box to take some pictures inside.

I used 3 different cameras: my Nikon Z fc, my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, and my Minolta X-700.

My light box is on the small side so I picked some ornaments and pens and a couple other small things.

With my Nikon Z fc, I used my Nikkor 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 lens. With all the photos I took that day, I did a lousy job metering so all the photos were dark. I had to do a lot of work in Lightroom to bring them back to life. I’m not sure why I struggled with these photos since I’ve taken plenty using my light box without any problems. I guess I was just having a bad shooting day.

With my Nikon, I took pictures of a couple of Holly’s new pens and one of mine on a pen stand I had gotten her for Christmas. Holly had given me the Ruby Kaweco to add to my collection. I also took a photos of Holly’s penguin phone stand.

I took “macro” photos with both my Canon and my Minolta. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t have a true macro lens so none of these probably qualify as true macro photos, but they’re in the ballpark.

Back in 2017, I bought an Opteka Achromatic 10x Diopter Close-Up Macro Lens adaptor for my Canon Rebel T3.

Of all my lenses, it only fits on the one that came with my Canon EOS Rebel 2000 film camera, a 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 which, luckily, is an EF lens that also fits on the Mark IV.

Since the macro adaptor is on a zoom lens, it’s hard to say for sure which, if any, of my photos are technically macro. But I got some nice close-up results.

I started with a few selections from my assortment of ornamental frogs.

I then returned to some pens and the pen stand.

Then I shot the charms on my Traveler’s Notebooks.

I finished with a few pictures from my Hooch clock which is a fun clock that I got at least 20 years ago. Before the pandemic, I always hung it up at work. Now that I’m working from home more often than at the office so I brought it home.

I took similar photos with my Minolta X-700 with the MD Zoom 35-70mm f/3.5 Macro I purchased ahead of our California vacation last year. I loaded the Minolta with Ilford HP5 Plus. Shooting macro-esque photos with black and white film was interesting and fun.

January is always a rough month for me so I’m thankful that Holly got me the light box for Christmas 2020 so I have the option to take some photos inside.
