Canon AE-1 with Lomochrome Metropolis

I shot a roll of Lomochrome Metropolis one time before and was somewhat intrigued by the results. I wasn’t in love with most of the images and stated that the film has, for me, limited appeal. That said, it was intriguing enough I decided to give it another try.

Metropolis mutes tones, but I had read or seen somewhere that red tends to be less muted than other colors. So I set out on a couple occasions, with my Canon AE-1, mostly looking for red things to take pictures of. I used my Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 lens on both occasions.

I had gone out 1 other time looking to shoot red things. That was with a roll of Kodak Ektar. At that time, my decision to take pictures of red things was arbitrary.

For the most part, I was unimpressed with the Metropolis photos this time around. The reds may have a little more life than the other colors but, overall, the images were still pretty muted. The scans I got back from the lab had a green cast to them that I had to remove in Lightroom. I used the same lab for the other roll of Metropolis and didn’t have that issue. That said, I wonder if something was amiss with their scanning that day because a lot of these images seem to also have a lot of dust on them.

It crossed my mind to rescan the negatives myself, but I’m not sure I’ll get around to it.

I took only 2 photos with no red in them (other than a little bit of the bricks of the factory).

I like the lamp photo. The factory one isn’t good, although I can’t blame that entirely on the film. My composition leaves a lot to be desired.

Of the red photos, 9 turned out pretty lousy. Or, at least, didn’t turn out as I imagined they would.

The majority of them turned out decent enough.

Thankfully, there were a handful of winners.

Although both rolls of Lomochrome Metropolis resulted in a few interesting images, I’m not sure this is a film for me. I wouldn’t rule out trying it again at some point but not in the near future. As I believe I’ve said a few times recently, with film prices going up, I see myself relying more on film stocks that a reliable for me. My days of experimenting with different films may be on hiatus.
